Professor Nathan Lawrentschuk is a distinguished Australian urologist and urologic oncologist based in Melbourne. He serves as a clinical and research professor at the University of Melbourne's Department of Surgery and is the Director of Urology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Additionally, he is the founding Director of the EJ Whitten Prostate Cancer Research Centre at Epworth Healthcare and holds a clinical position at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Professor Lawrentschuk completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 1996 and earned a PhD focusing on kidney cancer and PET-CT imaging at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. He further specialized in robotic, laparoscopic, and open cancer surgery during a two-year fellowship at the University of Toronto's Princess Margaret Hospital, one of the world's leading cancer centers. He is a certified member of the Society of Urologic Oncology.
His clinical expertise encompasses high-risk surgeries for cancers of the prostate, kidney, bladder, and testis, including retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND).
He is also an advocate for active surveillance strategies when appropriate and has contributed to the development of focal therapy approaches for prostate cancer to minimize treatment-related harm.
An accomplished researcher, Professor Lawrentschuk has authored over 500 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He is the Editor of the Australian and New Zealand Supplement for BJU International and serves on multiple international journal editorial boards. He has also been involved in mentoring and supervising medical students and urology trainees, fostering research in imaging, focal therapy, and penile cancer.
Beyond his clinical and academic roles, he co-founded the Bladder Cancer Australia Charity Foundation and has served as Vice-Chairman of the World Urologic Oncology Federation. He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand, the American Urological Association, and the Société Internationale d'Urologie.
